5 Practical Steps to Decorating the Home Office of Your Dreams

Alrighty, so you’re one of the few people on this planet that have their own home office, well done! The vast majority of working professionals never get to the stage where they are able to work from home, so they never really have the chance to actually have their own home office because frankly there is no need!

However, that doesn’t mean that people don’t secretly long for it. While the dream of having your own home office is wonderful, the reality is that you are going to be mixing your personal life with your working one… the key is how can you do both so that one area of your life doesn’t take over the other?

Well, If you’re really serious about creating a home office where you can work in peace and actually get things done while at the same time enjoying the space you are in, then you will have to really take the time to think about how you want to decorate your home office.

On your list of things to do, you might feel that thinking about what your office looks and feels like isn’t all that important, however, if you think about the fact that you are probably going to be spending a large amount of your life in this space, then all of a sudden you might realise that it is actually very important.

When you love the space that you’re working in, then it allows you to completely relax and get into the flow and enjoy the work that you are doing.

No longer does going into work have to be something that you dread, rather it can be something that you look forward to every single day!

So with that being said, hopefully, you understand and appreciate the importance of taking the time to decorate your home office.

Of course, I’m not going to just leave you to figure out how to do this yourself, rather if you keep reading you’ll understand exactly what you need to do to create the home office of your dreams!

Step 1: Express Yourself

I’m assuming that since you are building your home office inside your home that your home is already going to have been decorated in a fashion that expresses who you are as a person.

Well, there is no need to complicate things from here. You don’t have to think all too deeply about how you should start when you are decorating your home office… just begin where you left off with the rest of your home.

That literally means that you fill your office with things that you absolutely love. So if that means that you love indoor plants then fill your home office with indoor plants. If you love bright colors then paint your home office in bright colors.

Don’t for any reason feel you have to decorate your office to fit the style trend of the moment because remember at the end of the day you are going to have to spend your time in that office and if it isn’t designed and decorated to your tastes you are just going to be miserable.

You really want to create an environment where you feel joy and excitement to show up to work everyday…. This will of course only result in an increase in productivity and happiness which at the end of the day is all that matters.

Step 2: Get Organized

Get Organized

Yes, the reality is that just like any other area of your home, your new home office is going to become extremely disorganized if you don’t keep on top of things.

In 2019 there are a million different products out there that help you keep all your stuff neat and organized and of course you could just go out there and buy them all, however you need to be careful of falling into the trap of buying these organizing tools and not using them… it will only result in more mess for you to deal with.

The first step before you go out and buy any items to help you organize is to actually sit down and think about how you want to go about organizing things. Perhaps you could start by thinking about how you organize the rest of your life?

For example, if you are tech-savvy and are already used to scanning all your important files, such as bills, receipts etc and storing them digitally on your computer then there is no need for you to rush out to the market to buy a massive filing cabinet is there?

Because if you do, the reality is that you are going to find yourself with a bulky filing cabinet that just takes up space and doesn’t get used! There are a million products that you can go out and buy to help you organize your home office but the reality is that you don’t need most of them.

You need to figure out how to set things up that work best for you. At the end of the day keeping your home office organized will be a much easier task if you keep things simple and don’t buy a bunch of things that you don’t need or will never use!

Step 3: Go Up

Many people say they aren’t able to decorate their home office the way they want because the space they have to use is too small.

Well, the solution is very simple and it doesn’t matter how big your office is, you can implement it. All you need to do is take advantage of all that wonderful wall space all the way up to the ceiling.

Instead of trying to fit all the things you need in your office on the floor space, you can start using the empty wall space. So this means that you can hang all your artwork on the walls, put up shelves that stack up to the ceilings for all the things that you need to keep… the list can go on.

All you need to do is be a little creative and no matter what the size of your office space, you can find a way to fit it all in.

Step 4: Adequate Lighting

Traditional office spaces are known for having a ton of white tubes everywhere… often times making it feel like you are in a hospital emergency ward.

While not the most aesthetic of settings there is a reason why these traditional office spaces have a ton of white light and it’s mainly due to the fact that when you have plenty of light it will make you far more productive because working in a space with dull light just results in you having to concentrate more which is just counterproductive.

So keep this in mind when you are decorating your home office. Make sure you get as much natural light into the office as you possibly can, and on top of that put in good quality lights so that your office is nice and bright no matter what time of day you might be working… believe me, it will only result in increased productivity and efficiency.

Step 5: Get Cord Less

Telephone

Modern offices are full of wonderful technological wonders but with all that useful tech comes tons of cables that don’t look great and cause a lot of clutter to pile up.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that you should throw out the computer and replace it with a typewriter, but you can definitely take steps to tidy up all those messy cables.

The first thing you can do is stick the power brick to the back of your desk, this will mean all the cables won’t be in a messy pile on the floor. Then you can buy some cable ties and hooks which will help you control all the cable clutter and keep it all hidden behind the desk.

By implementing this simple strategy you are going to find that your office space will be a lot cleaner… And as we all know a clean environment will result in a clearer mind which will only result in you being a lot more productive!

Step 6: Get to Work

At the end of the day, there are a million things that you could do to decorate the home office of your dreams… but there is the only way to actually get it done and that is to get to work.

You could do all the research in the world to figure out what it is that you want to do with your home office but at the end of the day the best way to really figure it out is to actually start putting it all together.

Go out and buy the chair, the desk etc and as you put one piece of the puzzle together you’ll figure out the rest, one step at a time.
